The ones they
keep wearing.

A prosthesis a child will not wear has cost everybody involved a great deal for nothing. Two families told our partner in Costa Rica what changed when the device finally fitted the life it was made for. The accounts below are theirs.

Nico

He had worn a prosthesis before. It was heavy, it was uncomfortable, and he stopped wearing it.

Nico was born with an arm amputation. He'd had a prosthesis before, but it was heavy and uncomfortable, and like a lot of children given the wrong device, he simply stopped wearing it. His family found Fundación Biónica through the children's hospital, and three years ago they built him his first prosthesis that actually fit his life, light enough to forget he was wearing it. He outgrew that device and came back for a new one, which the Foundation funded.

Siany

Her insurance would not cover a prosthesis, and her family had nowhere else to turn.

Siany was born without fingers on one hand. She'd never worn a prosthesis as her insurance provider didn't cover one, and her family had nowhere else to turn. Due to the bullying she experienced, one of her teachers eventually reached out to our partner Fundación Biónica. With support from our donors, Siany was fitted with a prosthesis built for her.
